I have a feeling if these gung ho-"no buyout" Central guys were close to retirement they would be singing a different tune. They would be online as we speak, researching annuity rates, high dividend mutual funds, or cd rates!
Would they be searching the fact that they signed an agreement that said they would have to pay the money back if it was bound to be noncontractual or illegal? And that includes even if you’ve paid taxes on it the company could come back at any time after that and require you to return the money.
Do you think the union would’ve negotiated some sort of poison pill like that? I bet they wouldn’t have.
The central has plenty of guys who are high senior seniority that could take this or could continue to work another six months and make the same amount get another year of pension credit and move on.
My guess is very few of them are going to be buying annuities or investments, mostly Corvettes and boats lol.
Gonna look kind of silly when you got to handover those keys to UPS.

If I was looking for advice on keeping my yard green, I would certainly ask you if I was looking for advice on money or contractual issues I would run the other way.
