Indeed. 40ish years ago. And now they'll have more formally recognized control over it than they ever have.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iran%E2%80%93Iraq_War

"The Iran–Iraq War began with the Iraqi invasion of Iran in September 1980. After eight years of conflict, both countries accepted a ceasefire deal brokered by the United Nations, which became effective in August 1988. The war caused around 500,000 deaths (excluding numbers from the related Anfal campaign), making it the deadliest conventional war ever fought between regular armies of developing countries."

-------------

"Iraq was aided by the National Council of Resistance of Iran, the United States, the United Kingdom, the Soviet UnionFranceItalyYugoslavia, and most Arab countries."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tanker_war

"The tanker war, part of the larger Iran–Iraq War, was a series of military attacks by Iran and Iraq against merchant vessels in the Persian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz from 1981 to 1988. Iraq was responsible for 283 attacks. Iran accounted for 168."

They are not getting control over it. Ever.

There won't be any payments or fees to Iran for transiting the strait under the agreement? You sure?

Yep. I’m sure. What makes you think that there will be? You got a copy of the agreement?

When the Democrats are back in control?

When the Democrats are back in control?

Until then, Trump will never allow that. It would be the biggest reversal of his life.

The strait was open during their entire presidencies.

It may have been technically open, but now the Iranians won't be able to charge tolls as they did under Obama and Biden.

What tolls under Obama and Biden?

When the Iranians started this war, Trump made very clear what his goals were: To open the Straight of Hormuz with no tolls.

The Strait of Hormuz was open with no tolls before the US and Israel launched strikes on Iran on February 28.

So I guess you approved of a nuclear armed Iran.

I'd been told last summer and then again during this war that we could actually do something about it. Maybe we can't. Let's hear what's in that memorandum of understanding. Trump apparently wants to read it to us.

At the very least we’ve destroyed most of their military capabilities, and ended their nuclear ambitions for now. I agree, let’s see the deal. Then the next 60 days of more negotiations.

At least he can read and speak. Unlike that corpse we had before.

Bigger sham ever foisted on the American people in its history. 81 million votes, indeed.

U.S. Intelligence Shows Iran Retains Substantial Missile Capabilities

5/12/26

"The Trump administration’s public portrayal of a shattered Iranian military is sharply at odds with what U.S. intelligence agencies are telling policymakers behind closed doors, according to classified assessments from early this month that show Iran has regained access to most of its missile sites, launchers and underground facilities.

Most alarming to some senior officials is evidence that Iran has restored operational access to 30 of the 33 missile sites it maintains along the Strait of Hormuz, which could threaten American warships and oil tankers transiting the narrow waterway."

-----------

"Iran still fields about 70 percent of its mobile launchers across the country and has retained roughly 70 percent of its prewar missile stockpile, according to the assessments. That stockpile encompasses both ballistic missiles, which can target other nations in the region, and a smaller supply of cruise missiles, which can be used against shorter-range targets on land or at sea.

Military intelligence agencies have also reported, based on information from multiple collection streams including satellite imagery and other surveillance technologies, that Iran has regained access to roughly 90 percent of its underground missile storage and launch facilities nationwide, which are now assessed to be “partially or fully operational,” the people with knowledge of the assessments said."
