I've seen fools run-gun routes into the abyss. We are our own worst enemy.

We had one guy who was so notorious for screwing up routes his name became a a verb. As in to "blank" a route.
He would only stay on a route for a couple of years, screw it up beyond belief, then bid on another route. Rinse and repeat.
He was older when he started working at UPS so didn't have enough years in to retire when his body wore out. After 2 knee replacements he was able to get disability. Though for a while he still tried to drive a package car but was able to park his own car in the handicapped spot in the parking lot.

Many of our routes were semi rural. Anything bigger than a 7 wouldn't work, lots of flag lots, impossible to turn around.
Most people think of NY Metro to be like what they see on the Sopranos, 40 miles out, you have farms and McMansion's on 5-10 acres or more, these long lanes going in from the road.
