I remember when the freight guys looked down on UPS employees at union meetings in the late 70’s. I was in Local 728. For a couple of years we had Local 928 just for UPS, but the IBT didn’t like that, so we were moved back to 728. I still have a Local 928 car dash saver somewhere. This was the Old Guard days. Weldon Mathis was IBT Secretary General, Joint Council President, Local 728 President, and some other job. He was actually IBT President for a few months but got ousted when Jackie Presser died. He swore me in as a member and I used to run around with his nephew Mark when I first started driving. The days of Lincoln Town Car and custom tailored suits.
