Doesn't this remind you of the big doody in the truck thread? What dealer supposedly paid is not accurate. The dealer gets hidden rebates and discounts that won't show up on the fact sheet. I could afford an expensive shiny new car too but I don't drive enough to be worth it. I bought a 2025 with 16k miles.
Correct, they lie to you up front about the suggestive retail price. That's what I mean by "float", if that's still the correct term. The dealer doesn't mention certain rebates and other incentives they get from the manufacturer. I put car salesmen, child molesters, and politicians in the same class level of human scum. Only a fool pays the window sticker price. I take Consumer's Reports, a long time ago you could send in a VIN number and for a ten dollar fee, you could find out to the penny what the dealer actually paid for a car. They have to borrow money and pay for their cars up front, so the longer a new car sits on the lot the more money they lose. The only time I ever bought a new car for myself I went to a GM dealer and bought one of the last two 2002 Chevy S-10s they had on the lot using my brother's GM discount. Which was better than any UPS or Teamster's discount. It was a fixed price with no haggling. It turned out to be an excellent truck, I put 276K miles on it and drove it for twenty years with zero problems.
