Most of those "experts" don't take in to account private pensions or assume you will be spending money like a bandit after you retire. You can easily live comfortably on a lot less.
The big thing is to be debt free when you retire.

I was ultra cautious about spending the first year or so until I got a real world feel about everything.

You're definitely right, but this has inputs for just about everything, to tailor it to you.

I try to do that as well. Even their pessimistic projection, I'd have just as high of percentage as the historical averages.
