I had another one installed (Rheem 50-gallon gas model, drain pan, and expansion tank) for $1700 yesterday. The plumbers came early and were great. The price was what I expected. My plumber/pipefitter brother helped me install one at our previous house years ago, but he lives in Bowling Green, Kentucky now. I was tempted to buy it myself and install but you could run into warranty issues doing that. I have no experience brazing copper pipe and I didn't want to use Sharkbite fittings on it. My fault for not draining it yearly like I knew I was supposed to do. So I took a magic marker and wrote the installation date on it like I do on all my appliances. I'll try to drain it every six months now to prolong it's life.

Yea but why the heck did it start leaking? I mean, it was only 7 years old. Was the rod still in place?
I had a mixing valve put in with my 50 gallon unit. The temp is set for 150°, so with the mixing it's the equivalent of a 80 gallon heater.

The old one was builder's grade, so it was probably the cheapest they could get away with. I should have drained it yearly, so I will take the blame for that. Supposedly a water heater will last 2-4 years past the tank warranty if you drain it yearly. Tank warranties and price are based on how thick the tank metal is. A tankless system would cost $3500-5000 total, so I passed on that. Unlimited hot water but you have to wait longer for the hot water to get to the shower.
That site has links to news stories? My experience with that site has been mostly negative stuff about BC. Plenty of hate. Lol, they claimed to have never visited BC but mysteriously possessed vast knowledge of the inner workings.

Appliances don't last nearly as long as they used to. Water heaters may look the same on the outside but made with cheaper parts.

I agree, my dad and uncle ran a furniture store and were GE appliance dealers. They had an old GE fridge with the coiled condenser on top that was over 60 years old and still running. Once they started selling stuff with "off shore" parts like my dad called them, the quality really went down. And that was probably 50 years ago. Washers and dryers were simpler analog switches easily lasting 20 plus years and easy to fix. My dad used to go out on service calls with a nut driver, screw driver, and pair of pliers to fix about anything.

Do new ones even last long enough for periodically draining the tank make much difference?
