So now the anti-buyout crowd on social media are arguing that the buyout will hurt the pension. Like UPS cannot simply layoff.
Automation will happen, hub jobs will be toast.
People taking the buyout for the most part are folk close to retirement.
The union is using article 6 to say this is an extra contract agreement. It’s kind of a weak argument.
It’s 100% voluntary.local 710 in Chicago didn’t win a very similar case a few months ago. The company has pretty much won every one of these that I’ve ever heard of:
paying people a market rate adjustment
paying people a show up bonus
and my opinion
The driver bonus program, that the company implemented against the will of the union and they don’t really even recognize.
I understand the thought process behind the lawsuit. I just don’t think it’s going to win.

The company is taking MRA when part-time employees transferred to different shifts at my building. They’re not supposed to be able to do that at this point, but they’re doing it anyway.

I don’t think the Union was opposed to people getting more money. I think they’re opposed to having no rules and letting the company do as they please which in this instance seems like the correct concern by the union.

So basically “if you’re going to give the people money then let’s make it contractual so they know their rights”?
if I’m understanding it correctly, then this is one of those cases where I understand the unions case and I’ll always be grateful to them and support them but my goodness I’m happy the company didn’t listen lol. I made so much money during the show up bonus era and the MRA has been a giant help I’m super grateful for.
