I don’t think it had as much to do with fuel as it did with this company is a terrible company file bankruptcy several times and the only thing that could’ve saved them was that merger that she thought was a bad idea. Not even sure that would’ve saved it though.
They also had some severe operational impacts from their Pratt & Whitney engine recalls. It may have been part of the cause of the 2024 bankruptcy . They got some compensation from P&W but it didn’t make up for the losses of grounding the planes(40-60?) from what I remember. So 1. Elizabeth Warren😀, 2. present oil prices, 3. terrible management, and 4. P&W engine impacts.
Never had a crash or fatality since the early 80’s. Pilots/Mechanics/Attendants seemed to a good job. Gate Agents and passengers not so much. Only had to fly em once late 90s.

Non-budget airlines can probably absorb it better and/or have medium to long-term fuel contracts that stabilize pricing for them.

I don’t believe any of the US Legacy carriers hedge fuel anymore. Wall St transaction fees for the contracts have skyrocketed. Delta does own/subsidiary their own refinery. In Philly I believe. This will help on the spread of the oil vs refined price. I don’t believe it is able to cover all their fuel usage.
